Built a custom AI question generator for a UK EdTech company. They’d tried many solutions before — nothing worked. Shipped a working system in about a week.
🎯 The Problem
A UK-based EdTech company serves top schools across the UK, India, and the Middle East. They needed to generate educational questions for their platform.
Here’s the thing: they’d already tried a bunch of solutions. Off-the-shelf tools, various prompting approaches, different vendors. Nothing hit their quality bar.
The challenge with educational question generation is that it’s not just “make a question.” There are curriculum requirements, difficulty levels, specific formats, learning objectives. Get any of those wrong and teachers won’t use it.
🛠️ What I Built
Custom Question Generator
Built the full question generation system:
- Takes in the criteria (topic, difficulty, format, etc.)
- Generates questions that actually meet those requirements
- Structured output that plugs into their platform
Iterative Refinement
The first version wasn’t perfect — these things never are. But the setup made iteration fast, so we could quickly tune it to hit their specific needs.
Shipped the whole thing in about a week.
🧠 What I Learned
Custom beats generic for specific requirements. Off-the-shelf tools are great when your needs are broad. But when you have specific criteria — like educational standards across multiple countries and curriculums — sometimes you just need to build the thing properly.
